Data Shows Record-Breaking Number of Drivers Ignoring ‘Red X’ on Smart Motorways
Since 2021, over 53,000 drivers have been caught ignoring Red X signs on UK smart motorways.
The Red X indicates a closed lane, usually due to accidents or to allow emergency services access.
Data from IAM RoadSmart shows 4,393 drivers were caught in 2021, 20,773 in 2022, and 28,231 in 2023 by police enforcement cameras.
Nearly all police forces on smart motorways are now enforcing this rule, with penalties including a £100 fine and three licence points, or harsher punishments in serious cases.
