Passing and failing the MOT

If your vehicle passes the MOT, you’ll get an MOT certificate from the test centre and it will be recorded in the MOT database.

If your vehicle fails the MOT, you’ll get a ‘refusal of an MOT test certificate’ from the test centre. This is also recorded in the MOT database. You can appeal the result if you think it’s wrong.

We offer MOT Testing in Witney for all makes and models of Car and Van.

Vehicles over three years old in the UK must undergo an MOT test every year to meet road safety and environmental standards. Certified testing centres inspect essential components, including brakes, tyres, lights, exhaust emissions, and suspension. If your vehicle passes, it remains roadworthy, but a failure means you must address the issues before driving legally.

Booking your MOT Test in Witney with Standlake Vehicle services helps keep your car compliant, safe, and in good working condition.

Driving a vehicle that's failed its MOT

You can take your vehicle away if your previous MOT certificate is still valid. If your MOT has expired, you can drive your vehicle to either:

  • Have the failed defects fixed
  • A pre-arranged MOT test appointment

In both cases, your vehicle still needs to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times or you can be fined. You can be fined up to £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 penalty points for driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Mileage readings on MOT's

The MOT certificate will show the mileage recorded at the current and previous three test passes. This is shown as the ‘odometer reading and history’.

Report any mistakes with the latest reading to the MOT centre within 7 days. You will get a replacement certificate. Mistakes on an earlier mileage can’t be changed.

What happens if I don't have an MOT?

If you don’t have a valid MOT (Ministry of Transport) test certificate, you could face serious legal, financial, and safety consequences. The MOT is a mandatory annual test for vehicles over three years old in the UK to ensure they meet road safety and environmental standards.

Here’s what can happen if you fail to get an MOT:

🚫 Driving Is Illegal – Without a valid MOT, your vehicle is not legally roadworthy, and driving it (except to a pre-booked MOT test) can result in fines.
💰 Fines & Penalties – You could face a £1,000 fine for driving without an MOT.
🚗 Insurance May Be Invalid – Many insurers consider an MOT a requirement, meaning if you have an accident, your insurance claim could be rejected.
⚠️ Unsafe Vehicle – The MOT ensures key safety features like brakes, tyres, and lights are functioning correctly.
📉 Lower Resale Value – A missing MOT history can reduce your car’s value and make it harder to sell.

To avoid these risks, always keep track of your MOT renewal date and book your MOT Test in Witney in advance. Driving without an MOT simply isn’t worth the risk!
