Public ‘have no viable alternatives to the car’ according to the National Travel Survey

The 2023 National Travel Survey (NTS) revealed a 6% increase in car journeys by people in England, with an average of 915 trips per person, or 18 trips weekly. Despite this rise, trip rates were still 4% lower than pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

The NTS, a household survey on travel patterns in England, showed increased use of both private and public transport in 2023. Car drivers made 363 trips per person on average, while passengers made 185 trips, though both figures remained below pre-Covid levels. Driving a car was the most common way to start a trip, accounting for 39% of journeys.

Notably, females made more car trips than males, but males traveled longer distances. Public bus travel remained significantly lower than before the pandemic.
