Many Drivers Under 44 Admit to Skipping MOTs and Tyre Replacements to Cut Costs
One-in-five drivers under the age of 44 have admitted to driving illegally by not getting their car through the MOT or replacing tyres when necessary, as a way to save money amid the cost-of-living crisis. Among drivers of all ages, one-in-ten have skipped the MOT or delayed replacing worn-out tyres, despite these being legal requirements.
Additionally, drivers have delayed necessary repairs or reduced or stopped vehicle servicing altogether due to financial pressures. Avoiding routine maintenance or repairs can increase the likelihood of breakdowns and compromise road safety for both drivers and other road users.
Young drivers, particularly those under 25, are more likely to delay essential maintenance, with more than a third admitting to ignoring repairs and skipping servicing. This decision appears to be driven by rising costs, as three-quarters of motorists report that the price of servicing has increased over the past year.
Failing to maintain vehicles can be a false economy, as unexpected repair bills can be significant. Skipping MOTs and driving on unsafe tyres can increase the likelihood of accidents, putting all road users at risk.
