Winter Vehicle Health
As winter approaches, it’s time to prepare your vehicle for the cold months ahead. Falling temperatures can aggravate any mechanical issues, so take a few simple steps now to help avoid breakdowns and keep yourself safe on the road this winter.
Step 1: Schedule a Winter Check-Up
Booking a winter check-up for your vehicle is essential. These inspections cover critical areas like tyres, battery, coolant, antifreeze, wipers, lights, and oil levels – each of which is vital to safe and reliable winter driving. With the increased frequency of harsh weather, including heavy snow, and the challenges of pothole-damaged roads from previous winters, taking these precautions can make a big difference.

Step 2: Remember the FORCES Checklist Before Any Trip
Fuel: Ensure you have enough fuel for your journey; aim to keep your tank at least half-full to reduce the risk of running out if you get delayed.
Oil: Low or excess oil can lead to serious engine damage. Check your oil levels regularly and ensure they’re within the recommended range. For specific guidance, refer to your vehicle’s manual.
Rubber (Tyres & Wipers): Winter can be tough on tyres and wiper blades. Ensure your tyres have adequate tread depth, are free of cracks, bulges, and wear. Winter or all-season tires, designed to stay flexible in lower temperatures, offer better handling and braking on snow, ice, and wet roads. Also, make sure your wiper blades are in top condition to maintain visibility.
Coolant: Cold weather requires the right level of coolant, as it prevents the engine from freezing or overheating. Be sure your coolant mix is suitable for winter conditions.
Electrics (Lights & Battery): With shorter days, visibility is essential. Ensure all lights are clean and working properly, as dirt from wintry roads can quickly reduce their effectiveness. During our Winter Check, we’ll inspect your battery’s charge, clean terminals, and assess overall electrical health. Batteries over four years old may need extra attention, as cold weather can drain them faster.
Screen Wash: Winter roads are often muddy and wet, which can quickly make windshields dirty. Use a quality screen wash rated to at least -15°C to avoid freezing, and top it up regularly.
