Government Unveils Major Road Maintenance Plan for 2025-2026
The Government has announced a record £1.6 billion investment to repair roads in England. Local highway authorities will receive the funds to tackle the growing issue of potholes, with drivers in England and Wales encountering an average of six potholes per mile. The cost of pothole damage to vehicles averages £500, with severe repairs costing significantly more.
Funding Allocations Across England
The funds will be distributed to local authorities as follows:
- North West, North East, Yorkshire, and Humber: £327 million
- East and West Midlands: £372 million
- East of England: £244 million
- South East and London: £322 million
- South West: £300 million
The public is encouraged to report potholes to local councils, contributing to better road management. The initiative emphasises not only fixing existing potholes but also implementing preventative measures to reduce future road damage.
