UK Government Launches Digital GOV.UK Wallet and App to Simplify Public Services
The UK government is set to revolutionise public services with the launch of the GOV.UK Wallet and App, making it easier to access key documents and interact with government services digitally. These innovations come alongside major reforms to public sector technology, aiming to save taxpayers £45 billion while boosting efficiency and growth.
Introducing the GOV.UK Wallet
Starting later this year, the GOV.UK Wallet will enable users to securely store and access government-issued documents on their smartphones. The first digital credentials available will include an early version of a mobile driver’s licence, allowing users to prove their age and right to drive conveniently in both online and in-person transactions.
The wallet will leverage smartphone security features such as facial recognition to ensure digital documents remain protected, even if a device is lost. By the end of 2027, the GOV.UK Wallet will expand to include documents like DBS checks and other official credentials, while physical copies will remain an option for those who prefer them.
GOV.UK App
Set to launch in summer 2025, the new GOV.UK App will provide a seamless digital experience for accessing government services. Whether applying for childcare, reporting a lost passport, or completing other essential tasks, users will benefit from a streamlined, user-friendly platform. The app will also remember users’ activity, offering a personalised experience, with future updates set to include an AI-powered chatbot, payment options, and timely service notifications.
